In de afgelopen decennia zijn er dramatische veranderingen in het medialandschap geweest. Lineaire TV heeft steeds meer aan belang ingeboet terwijl video on demand diensten en streaming platformen elk jaar populairder worden. Om aan de enorme vraag van content voor de nieuwe media te kunnen voldoen, moet er steeds meer worden geproduceerd.
Er zijn nieuwe spelers op de videobewerkings-markt gekomen zoals DaVinci Resolve, terwijl anderen zoals Avid Media Composer en Apple's Final Cut hun leidende rol hebben verloren. Adobe is een van de eerste leveranciers die abonnementskosten in rekening bracht, terwijl volgens Grass Valley veel gebruikers nog steeds liever eenmalig software aanschaffen.
Grass Valley heeft besloten het huidige prijsmodel niet te veranderen: U koopt EDIUS X en mag het voor altijd houden en gebruiken.
EDIUS is traditioneel sterk in de broadcastwereld. EDIUS heeft wereldwijd een trouwe klantenkring onder persbureaus, zakelijke gebruikers, filmmakers, freelancers en contentmakers. EDIUS wordt ook veel gebruikt door federale instellingen en politieautoriteiten.
Er is dus een vrij brede gebruikersgroep met verschillende wensen. Iemand die nieuws, evenementen of bruiloften filmt zal zeker andere eisen stellen dan een tv-zender, filmmaker of social media content creator. Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken die EDIUS zo populair maken onder de gebruikers?
Bewerk elk beeldmateriaal op één tijdlijn, ongeacht de codec, framerate of resolutie
Met een scala aan opnameapparatuur, zoals professionele camera's, DSLR's, actiecamera's, drones en smartphones, hebben editors vaak te maken met verschillende codecs, bestandsformaten, framerates en resoluties. EDIUS kan bijna elke codec in oorspronkelijk formaat binnen halen zonder te transcoderen. Indien nodig zal EDIUS automatisch de framerate van een bestand converteren en de resolutie schalen naar de gekozen projectinstellingen. Deze functie komt ook goed van pas bij het selecteren van stock footage voor een project. U wordt niet langer beperkt door het formaat of de resolutie van het materiaal. Kies gewoon de beelden die u het beste bevallen en EDIUS X maakt alles geschikt voor uw project.
Werken aan complexe projecten zoals multicam montage in real time
EDIUS staat er om bekend dat het de kracht van uw PC zo goed mogelijk benut. Hierdoor was het mogelijk om in eerdere EDIUS versies HD en zelfs UHD/4K beelden te bewerken op een gewone kantoor-PC of notebook. EDIUS X tilt deze belofte naar een hoger niveau door de gebruiker de preview-resolutie tijdelijk te laten verlagen als dat nodig is. Vroeger was deze functie een exclusieve functie van de duurdere EDIUS Workgroup versie. Nu dat ook voor de EDIUS X Pro versie beschikbaar is, zijn er vrijwel geen grenzen meer aan het afspelen en bewerken, zelfs niet voor de meest veeleisende complexe projecten.
De efficiënte benutting van de kracht van de computer is cruciaal als het gaat om bijvoorbeeld multicam editing. In EDIUS X kunt u 9 video bronnen (camera's) in realtime afspelen. Door de preview-resolutie tijdelijk te verlagen profiteert u van een echte realtime weergave die een intuïtieve bewerkingservaring en workflow mogelijk maakt. U zult waarschijnlijk niet veel kwaliteitsverschil zien op uw beeldscherm. U kunt in EDIUS na het realtime camera schakelen elke afzonderlijke cut eenvoudig finetunen.
Niet te stoppen workflow: Render en exporteren tijdens het monteren
Met EDIUS X Grass Valley gaat de real time bewerkingservaring zonder ongewenste stops of pauzes een stap verder. Grass Valley is zeer ervaren in het optimaliseren van broadcast studio workflows door gebruik te maken van hoogwaardige netwerkbronnen en servers voor het renderen, transcoderen en exporteren van taken. Maar vanwege de kosten en extra hardwarevereisten was Grass Valley's oplossing "XRE Server" meestal alleen een optie voor grote faciliteiten.
EDIUS X bevat nu de krachtige XRE-functionaliteit die volledig gebruik maakt van de kracht van multi-core CPU's. Dit stelt de gebruiker in staat om een ruwe montage of onderdelen te exporteren tijdens een live evenement en tegelijkertijd kan doorgewerkt worden aan de finale montage. De editor kan bijvoorbeeld individuele klantgetuigenissen, interviews of previews exporteren die klaar zijn om te worden uitgezonden of worden afgespeeld op lokale schermen voordat de volledige montage af is. Deze functie is ook nuttig als u een toespraak, een concert of een ander optreden opneemt en u een deel van opnames wilt delen als preview voor uw publiek voordat de definitieve montage af is.
Krachtige en eenvoudig te gebruiken creatieve hulpmiddelen
EDIUS ondersteunt elke codec en elke LOG opname. EDIUS X bevat de "Primary Color Filter" die eenvoudig en intuïtief te gebruiken is. Met deze filter kunt u uw witbalans of belichting instellen door simpelweg de schuifregelaars te verslepen. EDIUS detecteert automatisch welke camera en welk profiel u gebruikt heeft voor de opname en om welk LOG-systeem het gaat. LOG-bewerking en kleurcorrectie is dus eenvoudig en snel. U kunt via de "Primary Color Filter" ook verschillende LUTS gebruiken. Als u wilt, kunt u ook het traditionele "Secundaire kleurcorrectie"-filter met zijn rijke functies gebruiken. In plaats van u te limiteren laat EDIUS X u werken op de manier die u kiest.
EDIUS X Pro en EDIUS X Workgroup laten u beelden tot 8K resolutie importeren en bewerken op uw tijdlijn. Exporteren naar 8k is een exclusieve functie van EDIUS X Workgroup.
Met de EDIUS X Layouter kunt u met behulp van keyframes soepel inzoomen op uw materiaal of uw opname snel herkadreren naar eigen smaak. Als u met één camera een interview heeft opgenomen is dit een geweldig hulpmiddel voor het herkadreren om sprongen weg te werken bij een cut.
Automatische tracking- en reframingopties
Met EDIUS X tekent u eenvoudigweg een mask rond een persoon of object en laat u dit geselecteerd gebied automatisch volgen (tracking). U kunt dan bijvoorbeeld een binnen het geselecteerd gebied de kleurcorrectiefilter toepassen, het accentueren of onscherp maken. Met EDIUS X kunt u heel eenvoudig een label op het gevolgde object aanbrengen, zoals een afbeelding, text of bewegende video.
Als u video's moet converteren naar verschillende beeldverhoudingen is EDIUS X heel efficiënt. Tijdens het volgen van een persoon of een object kan EDIUS X uw beeld automatisch herkadreren volgens de door u gewenste beeldverhouding. Dit kan u veel tijd besparen als u bijvoorbeeld een toespraak of een toneelvoorstelling in 16 x 9 opneemt en ook een 9 x 16 of een 1 x 1 aspectratio voor social media-platforms moet exporteren.
Klaar voor audio VST-plugins en WAVES Shell
Zelfs trouwe EDIUS-gebruikers zouden niet ontkennen dat EDIUS, naast al zijn prestaties en veelzijdigheid, nogal zwak was op het gebied van audio en slechts basisfuncties bood voor het aanpassen van instellingen zoals EQ, delay en pitch. Met EDIUS X is dit eindelijk veranderd. EDIUS X ondersteunt nu een breed scala aan VST2 plug-ins, waaronder de WAVES Shell.
Als u uw favoriete WAVES Compressor of DeEsser wilt gebruiken om uw voice over track of andere audio binnen EDIUS X te verbeteren kunt u dit doen met uw vertrouwde plugins.
Acon Digital EE Audio toolset inbegrepen
Als u nieuw bent binnen de wereld van audio tools heeft u misschien de voorkeur voor een eenvoudige “plug and play” oplossing om uw audio direct te verbeteren. Dat kan nu met het Acon Digital audiopakket dat met EDIUS X wordt geleverd. Het “Acon Digital EDIUS EDITION” pakket biedt vier audio filters met verschillende presets voor de meest voorkomende taken zoals ruisonderdrukking en audio optimalisatie. Het pakket heeft ook een zeer handige filter die ongewenste galm uit de audio verwijdert.
Dit alles wordt gedaan door intelligente algoritmes die het potentieel van EDIUS X volledig benutten en met slechts één muisklik worden toegepast. Als u dat wenst kunt u de instellingen ook wijzigen om ze aan te passen aan nog meer uitdagende situaties. De instellingen kunt ook opslaan als een nieuwe preset.
ProDAD Seamless Transitions Effecten-pakket inbegrepen
EDIUS X wordt ook geleverd met proDAD Vitascene V4 EE met de nieuwe "Seamless Transition" effecten voor dynamische overgangen met een vloeiend organisch gevoel. Alle meer dan 100 naadloze effecten kunnen worden geanimeerd en aangepast aan de individuele behoeften. De effecten werken ook geweldig op geanimeerde titels en afbeeldingen. Bovendien bevat het Vitascene V4 EE-pakket alle professionele overgangseffecten en video filters van proDAD Vitascene V4 LE.
NewBlue Titler Pro 7 inbegrepen
Om het aanbod van EDIUS X af te ronden wordt een speciale versie van NewBlue's Titler Pro 7 meegeleverd. Volgens Grass Valley heeft NewBlue hun titeling oplossing aangepast om de kracht en het potentieel van EDIUS X volledig te benutten. Dit resulteert in een indrukwekkende boost van real-time prestaties en snelheid bij het ontwerpen van graphics, lower thirds en geanimeerde complexe titels.
EDIUS X - Gewoon weer een NLE of echt het begin van een nieuw tijdperk?
Het is alom erkend dat EDIUS een voorsprong heeft qua prestaties vergeleken met de concurrentie. Het nieuwe interne core-ontwerp stelt EDIUS X nu in staat om PC-resources zoals multi-core CPU's op een nog efficiëntere manier te gebruiken dan voorheen. Echte parallelle processen zoals het converteren en exporteren van bestanden terwijl men doorgaat met monteren zijn nu mogelijk met behoud van prestatie en workflow.
Het is verbazingwekkend te zien hoe effectief Grass Valley hun high-end XRE-server technologie in EDIUS X heeft geïntegreerd. We hebben al enkele nieuwe menu-opties gezien, die nog niet actief zijn. We verwachten dat EDIUS X binnenkort nieuwe mogelijkheden zal bieden.
EDIUS X gebruikers zullen gratis updates ontvangen gedurende de gehele levenscyclus van EDIUS X, die naar verwachting tot drie jaar zal zijn. Volgens Grass Valley is het plan om via deze updates de expertise van derden op het kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) met machine leren te integreren. Dit zou dan spraakherkenning en transcriptie diensten mogelijk kunnen maken, evenals objectherkenning wat een andere grote aanwinst zou kunnen zijn voor gebruikers die werken met compatibele systemen voor het beheer van media asset management systemen.
EDIUS X gebruikers kunnen daarom verwachten dat het "nieuwe tijdperk van het bewerken" veel meer is dan alleen maar een marketing speech. Met de updates die in de loop van de levenscyclus van EDIUS X zullen komen, vertrouwen we erop dat Grass Valley zijn belofte zal waarmaken.
Mediamanagement
EDIUS X komt met Mync een slimme en krachtige mediamanager. Mync ondersteunt alle video-, audio- en fotobestanden die EDIUS X ondersteunt. Verwijderbare drives en geheugenkaarten worden meteen gedetecteerd en bestanden verschijnen met thumbnails en meta data zoals bijvoorbeeld het camera model in het desbetreffende venster. U kunt hier al uw materiaal organiseren en van extra metadata voorzien zoals bijvoorbeeld commentaren. Alle catalogs waarin uw media heeft gesorteerd en Storyboards die u heeft gemaakt zijn meteen in de source browser van EDIUS X te zien. Hierdoor heeft u een gestroomlijnde workflow.
Gratis ondersteuning en training
Tenslotte is er een centraal aspect dat cruciaal is voor iedereen die vertrouwt op EDIUS als professioneel hulpmiddel om geld mee te verdienen.
De EDIUS ondersteuning is betrouwbaar, gratis en snel. Uw lokale EDIUS gekwalificeerde dealer is meestal zeer bekwaam en gemotiveerd om u te helpen met eventuele problemen. The Berliner Philharmoniker, the Digital Concert Hall and EDIUS
The Berliner Philharmoniker is one of the most prestigious and famous orchestras worldwide. And offering about 40 concert programs and more than 130 concerts per year the orchestra is also extremely productive. This requires the media team of the Berliner Philharmoniker to be as effective as possible in production und postproduction as the concerts are being streamed live and then made available to the subscribers of the Digital Concert Hall in just a few days later. For many years, the Berlin experts fully and successfully rely on EDIUS while streaming, editing and during the postproduction process.
Eight stationary cameras in the concert hall of the Berliner Philharmonie
The concert hall of the Berlin Philharmonic was then equipped with eight stationary broadcast cameras. A live studio was installed also fulfilling the most advanced broadcast standards. And the development of an app was initiated serving a large variety of different soft and hardware platforms.
The offering of the “Digital Concert Hall” provides music lovers all over the world with the opportunity to enjoy concerts and documentations of the Berliner Philharmoniker on PCs as well as tablets, Smart-TVs as well as via Apple-TV and Amazon Fire-TV and even selected movie cinemas for special occasions.
The success of the “Digital Concert Hall” allows the Berliner Philharmoniker to generate continuously growing revenues. And this despite the trend of otherwise declining sales industry-wide in the worldwide market of traditional sound carriers.
Fulfilling the highest broadcast standards
“2008 the German Newspaper ‘Die Welt’ opened on page one with the headline ‘The Berliner Philharmoniker play for 10 Euros on the internet’”, remembers Christoph Franke, who was involved as sound director and creative producer form early on in planning and accompanying the development of the “Digital Concert Hall”.

Sponsored by the Deutsche Bank and broadcast suppliers like Sony and later Panasonic the Berliner Philharmoniker are equipped with camera and studio gear at the highest professional level which is continuously being updated. 2008 Christoph Franke and his team started the regular production workflow with Sony HD cameras as XDCAM 422. About two years ago the cameras, now supplied from Panasonic, as well as the live studio and postproduction studio were upgraded to 4K/UHD. The video signal of the eight stationary 4K-cameras is each being distributed by SDI-quadlink to the live studio and from there as AVC Ultra to the server room. Each camera signal is being recorded as AVC Ultra with a data rate of 800 Mbit/s.
EDIUS is an integral part of the Philharmonic’s workflow in multiple ways. “While streaming live we use EDIUS in combination with VisTitle, to playout titles and subtitles. The performance of EDIUS is a perfect partner to the multitude of VisTitle’s design options.”
EDIUS combined with VisTitle
Complex corporate design rules need to be followed. This also means that different fonts as well as font sizes need to be combined in one line. “VisTitle offers these options and the handling of SRT-files for subtitling also works perfectly” says Christoph Franke.

Once the concert is over the essential work for the postproduction team begins. The concert recording, which will soon be available in the media center of the Berliner Philharmoniker for all subscribers, is expected to meet the highest quality standards.
In a first step the live mixed audio stereo track is being exported with a compressed video signal. During the audio edit the video picture serves only to check that both are in sync.
Even before the actual concert the media team regularly records both rehearsals. “From time to time musicians ask us to use a certain part from the rehearsal for the master version” explains Christoph Franke. “Depending on the length of the sequence to be replaced we either exchange only the audio part or audio and video both together.”

When checking the recording the team might detect some disturbing background noise like somebody in the audience coughing. “We can then very much reduce this noise applying a Spectral Cleaning.”
Editing and optimizing the audio is being done with a specialized audio solution. Once the audio is finalized all further editing is done with EDIUS. The original audio track is being exchanged in EDIUS by the optimized audio version.
The script to the concert
Each concert is being thoroughly planned. The video directors study the score and mark the exact timing for switching cameras. The settings of the eight cameras – a nineth camera on a tripod in the hall can be added when needed – are all precisely defined by preset numbers.

“Because of the precise script and the experienced team in the live studio we need to do only minor changes during the later editing process” explains Christoph Franke.” But of course, it does happen from time to time that a musician is not yet playing when the camera was switched, or the focus might not be perfect.”
In EDIUS all tracks are available of all cameras that were involved in the recording. “The multi cam function allows us to time the switching differently when needed or even choose another camera as source.”
Realtime playback in multi-cam-mode
Thanks to EDIUS playing back the up to nine video tracks simultaneously with a data rate of 800 Mbit/s per track is no problem and possible at any time as the playback resolution can be lowered if needed. “This is an important feature for us and a great advantage. Whether the timing works right especially for music can only be judged if you can play back your project in real time” says Franke.
EDIUS allows Realtime playback in multi-cam-mode
EDIUS tools like the Layouter and the Primary Color Correction allow fast adjustments of framings, exposure settings and the color balance can just as easy and intuitively be corrected and adapted.
The master: 800 Mbit/s video data rate and 98 KHz 24bit audio
The EDIUS postproduction workflow is streamlined to maintain an optimal and therefore futureproof level of quality throughout the complete process of acquisition, recording and editing up to the final master in the shortest achievable time. Christoph Franke: “To maintain the best quality we export the master as AVC-Ultra 800 Mbit/s which is also our acquisition format. Thanks to the Smart-Render-Function EDIUS only needs to render those short moments, where we have applied changes to the picture. These are about only five minutes of a 2 ½ hours long concert program. EDIUS can therefore export the final master file as 4K HDR HLG (800 Mbit/s video data rate in 50p and 96 KHz 24-bit audio) in a fraction of the time that would otherwise be required.
EDIUS support and feature requests
Christoph Franke: “We are lucky that we have found with EDIUS not only an extremely powerful and stable NLE. We also benefit from a very capable support hotline which is in direct contact and exchange with the EDIUS development team in Kobe Japan.”
Within 48 hours maximum time the Berlin media team always received a qualified answer – and in special cases a little bit later even an enhanced EDIUS feature fully supporting the individual Philharmonic workflow.
Such an enhancement was the modification of the desired AVC-Ultra export function, which originally splits the export file into numerous files of 4 GB size each – fully compliant with the P2 specification by Panasonic. “For our workflow needing to export a master file up to 800 GB in size this P2 required splitting made no sense” remembers Franke. “We therefore asked the EDIUS support if they could help us”.
The support and development team were able to provide the desired solution. Since EDIUS version 9.3 all EDIUS 9 Workgroup users benefit from the extended functionality. XAVC Intra 4K and AVC Ultra 4K can now be exported within the MXF container without a size limitation as one file. The AVC Ultra MXF exporter was enhanced supporting HDR metadata and additional audio settings. Christoph Franke: “With this another important wish could be fulfilled because we produce 4K HDR with Hybrid Log Gamma“.
Remote rendering by the XRE-Transcoder Server
Additional to the concert master the Berlin media team also produces trailers for the social media channels of the Philharmonic. “And we use EDIUS to edit and subtitle the interviews with artists which are being shown during the intermission of the live concert streams”.

A lot of content is being produced and as many projects need to be edited and exported as master files. To reduce render times exporting files even further the EDIUS workflow was complemented by an XRE-Transcoder Server. This boosted productivity to the next level because the processing and rendering is now being performed completely by the XRE-Transcoder Server. Franke: “Our EDIUS seats only need to initiate the process and are then available for further editing tasks with all of their performance.”
By the time the management team of the Berliner Philharmoniker was developing the concept of the “Digital Concert Hall” about 15 years ago, the mangers clearly did not have in mind how helpful this digital concert hall might once become facing a global pandemic. With this the Berliner Philharmoniker succeeded in overcoming restrictions of the Corona crisis, keeping and even intensifying the contact and digital link to their audience.

Christoph Franke: “Within the last 15 years we have been able to gather a steady number of subscribers counting more than 70.000 customers. Among those are many private music lovers as well as many institutions like music academies and colleges worldwide. For this we are very thankful.
